Freedom has been awarded a Gold Award for waste management by the Green Organisation, the top award in our category, at this year’s Green Apple Environment Awards.
This award recognises our waste reduction initiatives and supports our new Group Net Positive strategy, which sets out our ambition to achieve zero avoidable waste in the longer term.
Since the beginning of 2020 we have established external partnerships that reprocess our waste materials into new products and modified our ways of working by adopting innovative re-useable products that result in less packaging and hazardous waste. We continue to actively look for opportunities to reduce or re-use the waste we generate as part of our services.
The judges were impressed with how we continue to maintain our target of zero municipal waste to landfill, together with our waste reduction initiatives, some of which include:
- Reducing plastic waste by diverting 2,260kg of plastic packaging to a local reprocessing plant
- Processing 11 tonnes of wood waste into kindling woodchip for re-use by a social enterprise
- Repurposing 200 carpet tiles to charity.
Simon Allen, Head of SHEQ, Services division said:
“We’re really pleased and proud to receive this award. It not only acknowledges the great strides we’re making as a business with regards to our environmental practices and waste initiatives but also the work of our Freedom colleagues who continue to integrate environmental best practice and sustainable ways of working into their everyday activities.”
The Green Apple Awards are run by The Green Organisation – an independent, international, non-political, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
