CASE STUDY: Substation Projects

Freedom have been appointed as the Principal Contractor in a major project associated with an existing 132kV/11kV substation in London’s Canary Wharf district.

West Ferry Circus is a brick built substation, with three enclosed transformer compounds to the west of the building and a two level switchroom/control room to the east, the project was to increase its electrical supply capacity.  Due to the scale of the project it was split into two phases.  Work on phase 1 of the project commenced in March 2010, which involved the installation of control and protection cabling through the new 132/11kV GT4 Transformer and was completed in June 2010.  Phase 2, the main electrical works programme began soon after.

The scope of the works involves:

  • Connecting and Commissioning of pre installed 51 – panel Siemens NX Plus 11kV switchboard.
  • Installation and termination of the 11kV cable connections between the GT4 132/11/11kV transformers and neutral earthing reactors (NEX) and all 11kV cables between the existing and new Siemens 11kV switchboards.
  • Installation, termination and connection of 11kV cables to rearrange the existing load sharing from 3 transformers to 4 transformers through the new board.
  • Installation of 132kV busbar connections from the cable terminations and the GT4 Transformer and Earth Switch.
  • Provision and installation of main earth connections to all structures and equipment, and earth tapes on each outgoing 11kV cable routes.
  • Modification to existing relay panels for GT1.
  • Supply and installation of additional 110v Battery and Charger.
  • Management of the modification of the new CO2 fire protection to comply with current standard.

As the Principal Contractor at West Ferry Circus, Freedom have had an exemplary HSEQ record so far, which is testament to the fact that all works are being conducted with a high level of safety and environmental awareness, with excellent control of all staff.

The project is on target and forecast to complete by August 2011.
