Soham to Ely 33kV Cable

Feasibility Study and Consenting

The Brief

To provide a feasibility study and consenting for a new 33kV cable electricity supply between Soham and Ely primary substations to reinforce the existing infrastructure. The route would be a minimum of 12km across arable fenland and city outskirts.

The Approach

Freedom’s surveyor offered possible routes to the contract engineer to locate a feasible route south of a significant watercourse, the Soham Lode, thereby avoiding the congested high street in Soham. Consulting with 24 different grantors, they were persuaded to allow the cable through their land, the majority of which is highly productive arable and cash crop fenland. A GPS survey to plot the route was also completed. The cable crossed under two railway tracks, the Great Ouse River, Internal Drainage Board water courses, and a high pressure gas main.

The Delivery

Freedom delivered a feasible route, avoiding urban areas with 24 grantors signed on to the scheme, in a time frame that enabled construction to start punctually. Access consent for this was arranged through Freedom together with gaining all statutory consents prior to construction.
