Overhead Lines

What we do

From our operational bases throughout the UK, we provide a survey, inspection, design, construction and refurbishment service for wood pole overhead lines from LV through to 132kV. The projects we undertake range from LV defective pole replacement programmes, to large 132kV Trident line new build projects. Our survey, inspection and design capability extends to 400kV overhead steel tower lines.

Who we do it for

We carry out these services for Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), as well as for renewable energy providers needing to connect to DNO networks from new wind and solar farms, geothermal and waste to energy plant. DNO clients include UK Power Networks, Western Power Distribution and Northern Powergrid. Renewable energy clients include BayWa r.e., Sunedison, Lightsource, Solar Century and Oskomera. Freedom also provides overhead line services to non-regulated clients – please see HV/LV Networks.

Why Freedom

Operating in a safety critical environment, our directly employed highly trained and authorised teams have extensive experience in the construction and refurbishment of wood pole lines using our own specialist plant. Conducting customer impact assessments, we keep customers informed of any interruptions and follow-up on work completion. With national coverage, we provide an efficient and cost effective storm response service to minimise the impact on customers’ supplies.

Overhead Lines includes

  • Defect clearance

Where network issues have been identified that contravene the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations (ESQCR), we have the capability to programme and deliver the necessary remedial works to correct the defects. Examples range from low ground clearance, missing or damaged danger notices and replacement of open wire conductors through to climbable trees and anti-climbing guard replacement.

  • LV Main and Service Replacement

Freedom undertakes programmes of work to deliver the replacement of open wire LV overhead lines with aerial bundled conductors (ABC) to improve the safety of the network and security of supply. In addition we replace outdated LV overhead services to customers’ properties.

  • HV and EHV Circuit Build and Refurbishment

Freedom has the capability to build heavy construction wood pole overhead lines up to 132kV. Our portfolio includes 33kV single and dual circuit lines, suspension and Trident lines. We have a number of highly experienced and authorised directly employed wood pole construction line teams. These teams utilise our own pulling and tensioning equipment, tracked access vehicles and other heavy plant.

  • HV / LV D Pole Replacement

We undertake programmes of work to replace decayed (D) wood poles on overhead HV and LV networks. This involves planning and execution of the replacements, including arranging planned customer interruptions. Whilst undertaking these programmes, we identify and clear other defects in order to increase the security of supply.

  • Generation Connections

Wherever a generation customer requires an overhead line connection between their facility and the distribution network, Freedom can provide the solution using our in-house resources. We build, connect, commission and power-up the line leaving our clients to concentrate on their core business of generation.

  • Emergency / Storm Response

In support of our clients’ drive to minimise customer minutes lost (CMLs), we provide out of hours callout services to restore supplies to customers during storms or other system emergencies. Our teams are on standby to mobilise to site within agreed response times.
