What we do


Through our in-house capability we can provide all aspects of HV and LV engineering from design and feasibility through to energisation and maintenance. Whether you are looking for a small cable diversion, the building of a new HV substation, the installation of an 11kV network or an inspection and maintenance service, Freedom can offer you the advice and service you need.

Who we do it for

Freedom builds relationships on trust and expertise, demonstrated by our long-term maintenance contracts. We know our clients and their networks intimately, providing clients with confidence by ensuring that we are on their site within three hours. Freedom applies its skills to a wide range of sectors and clients, be it Onshore and Offshore in Oil and Gas, Manufacturing, Renewables, Ports, Logistics / Distribution, Museums and Historic Houses. Clients include; Exxon Mobil, DP World, Birmingham University and Boots.

We can provide a complete end-to-end service, starting at feasibility and design, followed by survey and inspection, through to installation and on-going operations and maintenance. Freedom has contracts with all of the major UK DNOs which means that we have experience of working to each DNO’s standards, including providing Connections to their Distribution Networks. Freedom provides clients with one dedicated point of contact for all of these works.

O&M of HV/LV Networks includes

  • Cut-out Changes

    Freedom manages service cut out changes on a planned routine asset replacement basis, as well as on a reactive basis, to facilitate smart meter installations where intervention is required. Our service includes the whole customer experience from appointment making, delivery and post-work satisfaction survey.

  • Link Box Replacement

    Freedom can manage the whole process for low voltage link box changes. This starts with a detailed inspection and report process through to the complete excavation, reinstatement and jointing of replacement boxes.

  • LV Operations & Maintenance

    With a National team of qualified electricians, Freedom support DNOs, factories, schools, colleges, marine and offshore clients in maintaining and upgrading their Low Voltage systems. We also carry out NICEIC Electrical Installation Condition Reports, manufacture individual control panels such as auto change-over panels for standby generation on Wind Farms and supply onsite and offshore labour to clients. Work locations include substations, switch rooms, compounds and service tunnels, as well as offshore supply vessels, nuclear fuel transporter ships and their onshore supply facilities. Our team has the relevant technical knowledge and the competency to receive operational documentation, should the location contain exposed conductors or should a safety document be required. We are NICEIC registered, our experienced team is able to provide the necessary advice and technical support to ensure these installations are safe and compliant, with the reassurance of using an accredited organisation

  • Major Substation Projects

    Many clients are facing major asset replacement programmes owing to the age profile of their plant. Freedom provides complete substation design and build services, as well as reinforcement work following general load growth driven by the economic recovery. Freedom has a unique mix of in-house civil, structural and electrical engineering resources that provide comprehensive solutions for major substation projects, including full turnkey delivery. With a truly integrated design and delivery service, we provide cost effective, innovative solutions for asset replacement or upgrade / extension projects at all voltages up to 132kV.

  • 11kV Distribution Ring Installation

    With a range of in-house services, Freedom can offer customers, with their own HV networks, a complete asset replacement / installation service. This includes design, procurement, installation and commissioning of the new equipment from the client’s 11kV network through to the main LV ACB. We can also offer advice regarding the replacement of restricted switchgear, so that the integrity of the site’s network is maintained.

  • HV Operations and Maintenance

    With National coverage of skilled staff, we can provide HV operations and maintenance services across the UK. This ranges from covering a single site to multi-site agreements, which ensure that HV customer owned networks are inspected, serviced and maintained in line with legislation and the manufacturer’s recommendations. We currently provide these services to clients from many sectors including, Commercial, Transport, Healthcare, Education, Renewables, Industrial, Manufacturing, Technology, Oil and Gas and Water. This experience ensures that our engineers are competent with operating both older oil switchgear and new modern SF6 gas ranges, so that your network remains safe and reliable.

  • HV Equipment Changes

    With a broad, self-delivery capability to complete HV distribution substation replacements, Freedom delivers a seamless service by managing all engineering issues. These include: outage planning, adaptation or construction of new bases, plant logistics, incorporating delivery to site, excavations, reinstatement and cable installation, HV jointing and all operational works by highly experienced SAPs who have been working in this field for many years

  • Emergency Supply Restoration

    With SAPs employed across the UK, we operate a 24/7/365 emergency callout service. This is backed up by a dedicated, permanently manned response team to ensure that all calls are received and passed to our on-call engineers. We aim to attend site within four hours (anywhere in mainland UK) so that your network fault can be diagnosed and rectified. In addition, we own specialist cable fault location equipment which can assist with locating underground cable faults. This ensures that any Outages are kept to a minimum and that your power is restored as quickly as possible.
