Project Brief
As part of Freedom’s condition point surveys of main substations the cast iron spiral staircase for the access to the Control and Battery rooms to Blackhorse Lane MSS was identified as being in need of replacement due to the age and deterioration of the metalwork.
Our brief was to safely remove the old staircase and remove from site and reinstate with new galvanised stair in accordance with the new fire escape regulations.
The Project
The site restrictions were evaluated due to the number of live transformer bays and it was established that two number Transformer bays would require switching out (Bays T2 & T4). A LOA was issued ensuring a safe system of work for both personnel and crane operations.
A mobile city crane was brought to site for the lifting out of the old staircase and installation of the new, working within very tight restrictions whereby the boom of the crane and load could not enter above any transformer bay. This was achieved by setting the boom close to vertical and slewing around on the crane axis with the load below the level of the fence/wall thus giving a physical barrier from the live and dead equipment, staying well within safe working distances, the load being supervised by a Freedom K1 certified Project Manager.
A MEWP was also pre-positioned on site in advanced of the crane for access to the old and new staircase operations.
The dismantling and installation of new staircase was a complete success with some of the loads being constructed in the compound area in front of the crane and very slowly maneuvered between the space left between the crane and transformer bay wall / fence.
