The Brief

Freedom was commissioned to facilitate the permanent 33kV connection of a major solar farm to an existing tower with old circuit operating equipment. The brief required a solution for both the installation and on-going operation of the new point of connection.

The Approach

Following a detailed study of the existing tower and review of the various health and safety issues, it was agreed that the method of connection needed to produce minimal mechanical load transfer into the existing tower, to ensure that the inline circuit switches operated correctly. Adjacent to the tower, at the point of connection, was an 11kV wood pole overhead line. This provided limited access for the installation of the new structure. Innovating with a radical design, Freedom developed POC-MAST for each point of connection, based on the latest Eurocodes, using a folded steel mast.

The Delivery

Within short design timescales, Freedom successfully completed the project and delivered a patented, safe and cost-effective connection solution, known as POC-MAST , which has since won a prestigious UK industry innovation award, from Construction News.
