Freedom was required to install a 22kV duct and cable and link with existing ducts on a 1.6km route from Newington House to Bankside substation. The route crossed a listed utility subway at one of London’s busiest junctions.
This challenging project required planning and meticulous attention to detail from Freedom’s management and teams. Section 50 notices were booked in advance. Site surveys and trial excavations with the local authority and TFL were undertaken to ascertain the location and condition of the ducts. These revealed old tramlines and hydraulic oil lines not shown on utility drawings, enabling Freedom to plan the works and an alternative crossing.
The old tramlines and hydraulic oil lines were removed, the existing ducts were located and the new ducts installed at the correct depth. Freedom’s CAT C qualified teams delivered the cable pulling within the shafts and tunnels. The crossing route was completed replacing the original plan, which would have been impossible due to traffic management problems.
