Freedom was briefed to act as the principal contractor to deliver a 4.5km 33kV cable and 24 mode fibre optic cable from the Exning Solar Farm to Burwell Primary before the end of March to obtain the current Renewables Obligation Certificate (ROC). Freedom was also asled to complete the construction of a 33kV switchroom at that site.
Owing to the complexity and sensitivity of the proposed route, the Freedom team liaised closely with local authorities, landowners and National Grid. Co-ordinating the project from end to end, crossing and landowner consents were obtained. Early trial excavations enabled timely planning for the gas main crossings to be completed and approved by National Grid Gas. Directional drilling enabled the cable to cross under the canal. Working with local authorities, appropriate traffic management measures were implemented whilst the cables were laid through the town of Burwell.
The project was implemented without incident and was completed and connected in the required time for SunEdison to achieve their objective and obtain the current government incentive in the prevailing ROC.
