UK Power Networks requested a solution from Freedom to avoid switching out 11kV, 33kV and pilot cables located at a roundabout to be accessed by a new dual carriageway under construction. Freedom understood it was critical to avoid delays to the road construction.
Freedom surveyed the site as the existing cables were too shallow for the road to cross and they had to remain live. With safety as a priority, Freedom suggested lowering them whilst in place. The client agreed and a full survey was carried out to ensure that there were no joints, either in the section to be lowered or in the adjacent sections.
A vacuum excavator was used for all the excavation works to suck the earth from beneath the ducts. The ducts lowered under their own weight, the cables came to rest in their new position and the operatives did not have to access the trench during the lowering process. A lane closure was put into place and full traffic management procedures adopted. Freedom safely delivered a continuous supply in good time, without delays to the road construction.
