Health and Safety - Take Two

Health and Safety

The one aspect that underpins everything we do

Freedom provides many different engineering services to the utility industry and wider sectors, but there is one aspect that underpins everything we do - Health and Safety.

Working with electricity and in potentially dangerous environments always means thinking about Health and Safety. After all, electricity kills. The Health and Safety Executive have around 1000 electrical injuries reported each year, with 2.5% of cases ending in death. So for us, Health and Safety is one of the most important aspects of our business.

We have continued development of structured safety systems, robust policies and formalised communications is a vital ingredient in our continued improvement programme. The safety and environmental systems implemented conform and are accredited to OHSAS18001 and ISO14001:2004 respectively.

Freedom places major importance in the role of a positive safety culture within its workforce to maintain these high standards. Our people are at the heart of all we do and therefore our drive for a positive safety culture reflects the needs of our people. In addition, a focussed team of auditors are continually monitoring safety performance and compliance.

Effective communication is key to our success and a number of mediums are used including forums, newsletters, road shows, stand down days, team talks and toolbox talks all off which are key elements in an efficient management system.

We have developed a unique culture improvement programme called Take Two. This initiative reflects on the connection between perception and behaviour, considering the consequences of an individual's actions not only on themselves and their colleagues - but also on their family and loved ones.

This human approach and the belief that our people are our most important asset assist in our innovative approach to safety development. Through workforce participation, and involvement in the decision making process a united front is forged to ensure a common approach is maintained. Continual improvement is integral and inherent within the business; our vision is further enhanced by continually improving the safety and competence of our staff through innovation.

Our commitment to Health and Safety has been acknowledged with the prestigious RoSPA Gold Medal, which is only awarded to organisations that have achieved five to nine years of consecutive Gold Awards, proving that we have a successful Health and Safety culture, which we are constantly improving.
